Kitchen Renovation - Updating the old Island.

Our new kitchen is much larger than our last, with a nice big island in the middle with integrated oven and stove. It's a really handy place to cook and eat. On closer inspection of the base of the island, we noticed that it was a bit of a rush job. Cheap plyboard covers a sturdy frame, with mismatching trimming that was barley holding things together.

There is an outlet wired into the back side of the island, which is handy except that it was not installed properly and it shorted out as I was inspecting it. And then there was the fire-engine red color the whole thing was painted. We can do better!

A little internet research brought us to this great example: http://www.remodelaholic.com/2013/02/kitchen-island-makeover/

A design and color we really liked.

I took this picture of our kitchen before we purchased the house when the old owners were showing it to us for the first time. Yellow walls, red accents... yeah, this is not our style.

Here we are priming the plyboard with basic acrylic primer. I reinforced the outlet box properly and installed a new receptacle.

Following the guide linked above, we cut the trim pieces and then attached them with a finishing brad gun. The trim really helped to physically reinforce the structure and ads a lot to the aesthetic look of the island.

Filled the nail holes with putty and used painter's caulk to seal the seams.

First coat of paint of several. Light sanding between coats helps create a professional looking finish.

And here is the finished painted island. We used a white glaze to add some definition to the edges. To finish it off, we'll add a coat of poly to ad some gloss and protection.
